Does Aluminum Foil Help Plants Grow?

by Jun 27, 2019

Gardening can be a relaxing, calming and therapeutic hobby while giving you a sense of achievement and personal accomplishment all in one. It can also be very stressful and aggravating especially when you do everything right but pests and insects take it upon themselves to destroy your garden and plants.

Now we all know that aluminum foil has many benefits in your household but did you know it can help you have a more prosperous garden as well?

There are lots of ways that aluminum foil can help aid your garden’s crop life and make gardening even more stress free then it already does. Try a few of these simple truths, but first I want to answer a couple questions people have regarding using aluminum foil in their garden

Is Aluminum Foil Bad For Plants?

Absolutely not! Not only is it perfectly safe for your plants, it is a great, clever way to recycle and reuse common household items. One of the benefits that aluminum foil has on your garden’s soil is that it retains soil moisture and helps warm and cool down the soil to make the life of your plants prosper.

Can Aluminum Foil Be Composted?

For all you eco-friendly and earth conscious gardeners out there the answer is no according to Compostnow.org. Once you are done using the aluminum foil in your garden, you want to throw it away with the rest of your trash. Please don’t recycle.

Now onto the good stuff. How does aluminum foil benefit your garden? Below is 3 great tips that you can use quickly and see the results right away.

1. Make A Sun Box Out Of Aluminum Foil.

By putting a plant or plants in a box covered with aluminum foil, it will reflect sunlight onto the plant encouraging growth by providing more warmth due to the suns reflection. Simply find a box or even a shoebox that will fit your plants and put aluminum foil all around the inside. If you see that the foil is coming off a little just add some tape to ensure that it stays in place.

2. It Scares The Birds Away.

Birds, in general are terrified by shinny objects and will instinctively stay away from them. If you are having bird problems and your fruits are being eaten all the time just wrap some of your branches with some aluminum foil. Doing this, your bird problem is done.

3. Keeps Bugs Away

By laying down foil around your plants this will keep the insects, slugs and bugs away. Simply lay down foil around your plants as the picture shows below and put some small stones on it to keep it from blowing away. Doing this also conserves moisture in the soil, balances out the temperatures in the soil and keeps weeds from growing in your garden.

I hope you enjoy these tips as much as I did. Please don’t hesitate to leave a comment below if you have any questions.
